What We Believe

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).  Our core beliefs are given in the confession of faith that is included in our church constitution:

  • This congregation confesses the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • This congregation confesses Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and the Gospel as the power of God for the salvation of all who believe.
  • This congregation confesses the Gospel, recorded in the Holy Scriptures and confessed in the ecumenical creeds and Lutheran confessional writings, as the power of God to create and sustain the Church for God’s mission in the world.
  • We believe that God is revealed to us through Word and Sacrament (Holy Baptism and Holy Communion).

FOUNDATIONS FOR MINISTRY

JESUS CHRIST AT THE CENTER

We believe that Jesus Christ should be at the center of all that we do (Philippians 2:1-5; 1 John 2: 3-6).

THE WORD

We believe the Holy Bible was written by humans inspired by God, written within a social context and is the cradle that holds Christ, the living Word of God (John 1: 1-5).

THE SACRAMENTS

Baptism:  We believe that Baptism was given to the Church by Jesus Christ in the Great Commission (Matthew 28: 19-20).

Holy Communion:  We believe that Jesus Christ instituted Holy Communion, and through this meal God nourishes faith, forgives sin, and calls us to be witnesses to the Gospel (Matthew 26: 26-28).

WORSHIP AND MUSIC

We believe that God created humans to worship and glorify God (Exodus 20:3-6).

We believe, as Lutherans, that singing and congregational participation in worship are important. “Sing to the Lord a new song, sing to the Lord all the earth.”  (Psalm 96)

PRAYER

We believe that prayer is an important way to strengthen our relationship with God (Matthew 6: 5-8).

GOD’S MISSION IN OUR CHANGING WORLD

We believe that, as followers of Jesus Christ, we are committed to share God’s love and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4: 11-13).  We believe that core message does not change (Hebrews 13: 8). What we do and how we do it should change as needed to further God’s mission in our changing world (1 Corinthians 9: 19-23).

MAKING DISCIPLES

We believe that God calls us to make disciples, so that the Good News of Jesus Christ will be passed from one generation to the next and spread to the ends of the earth (the Great Commission: Mathew 28: 16-20; Ephesians 4:11-13).

SPIRITUAL GROWTH

We believe that spiritual growth is an outcome of an intentional effort to get closer to God and conform to God’s will by becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ and having our lives changed by Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 3:14-21).

STEWARDSHIP

We believe that God gave us the responsibility of taking care of creation (Genesis 1:26-29). We believe that we are called by the Holy Spirit to identify, nurture and use our individual spiritual gifts for the common good (1 Corinthians 12).

COMMUNITY LIFE

We believe that the “church” is the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 3:16-17).

YOUTH AND FAMILY MINISTRY

We believe our children and youth are an integral part of Holy Trinity.

MISSIONS

We believe that, as followers of Jesus Christ, we are committed to share God’s love and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ without regard for how it will benefit Holy Trinity (Ephesians 4: 11-13).

OUTREACH

We believe that, as followers of Jesus Christ, we are God’s representatives in the local community. We reach out to our neighbors to share God’s love and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ, with the intent of bringing our neighbors to join the family of Christ at Holy Trinity (Matthew 28: 18-20).
